The meeting between US President George W Bush and Chinese President Hu Jintao was not merely overshadowed by a lone Falun Gong protester, but also an indepth report by four human rights organisations into the torture of Chinese Christians.
China Aid Association, the Institute of Religion and Public Policy, Jubilee Campaign USA and Midland Ministerial Alliance helped compile the report that highlighted cases of state-sponsored torture of evangelical Christians during 2005. The report, released to coincide with President Hu’s US visit, includes photo evidence and video interviews of 19 believers from five different provinces.
“Since this report only deals with some cases of the torture and abuse against the evangelical house church movement, it only reflects the tip of the iceberg and is by no means an exhaustive report,” said co-author Bob Fu.
The report includes the testimony of Zhao Yan, 23, who recalls how she was kicked and tortured with broken glass and cigarette butts after she was arrested for having a Bible study with two American students at Zaoyang in Hubei province, in August, 2005.
