New Zealand evangelicals have sought encouragement from a visit from the Archbishop of Sydney over the homosexual row splintering the worldwide Anglican Communion.
“The efforts of liberal theology are, in human terms, endangering the gospel enterprise of the church,” Dr Peter Jensen told a NZ newspaper last month during his visit. “If we do not stand here we will not be able to stand anywhere.”
Dr Jensen and his wife Christine were hosted in Christchurch by Charlotte Rivers, formerly of the Anglican Information Office (Sydney). Dr Jensen was invited to St John’s, Latimer Square to speak at 150th anniversary celebrations and at a conference called ‘Communion in Crisis: The Way Forward for Evangelicals’.
Anglicans are hearing reports of a crisis and are nervous, rector of St John’s, Wally Behan told NZ media.
“We [brought] Peter Jensen here to encourage evangelicals in this time of crisis and suggest some ways forward.”
