For the 16th year running, Ryde City Council celebrated the contribution of the Christian faith to Australia’s history at a prayer breakfast held at Ryde Civic Hall on August 10.

Professor Stuart Piggin, Director of the Centre for the History of Christian Thought and Experience, spoke about the role of Christianity in Australia in five ‘short stories’, which traced Christianity through prominent Christians such as reformer William Wilberforce, who sent one of the first chaplains to Australia, and William Henry, who preached the first sermon in Ryde.

“Australia’s Christian heritage has made a contribution to the development of Australia which most people don’t understand because secular historians have left it out of their account,” said Professor Piggin.

“The fact that in Ryde they want to persevere with a Christian prayer breakfast shows a determination to draw on our Christian heritage for a stronger nation in the future.”
