The day will come when ‘the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea’ (Isa 11:9; cf. Hab 2:14).
What an astonishing prospect that is! It will be a very different world from the one in which we find ourselves today, where knowledge of God is rare. Ignorance and denial of God are now more apparent than knowledge of him. Those who do know God recognise the wonder of the Bible’s promise. The knowledge of God is so good! To know God is to know love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal 5:22-23). In Christian fellowship, where God has begun to be known (cf. 1 Cor 13:12), we experience a taste of these good things, and marvel at the promise of a day when the earth will be full of the knowledge of God.
While our minds fail us when we try to understand what this will be like, we know that God has made himself known in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ (John 1:18; cf. 1 John 5:20) and through the proclamation of the message about him given to us in the Bible (2 Cor 4:1-6).
The importance of what we do in evangelism as Christ is proclaimed (see 2 Cor 2:14) and in church and other Christian gatherings as we prayerfully hear and study the word of God (cf. Col 1:28 – 2:3) can only be fully appreciated in the light of God’s great promise that one day our partial knowledge of him will give way to full knowledge (1 Cor 13:12) which will fill the earth as the waters cover the sea.
The importance of Moore College is also only appreciated in the light of that coming day. At Moore College men and women study the scriptures in order to grow in the knowledge of God and therefore be equipped to share this knowledge with others. Nothing in all the world is more important than that! The faculty, the library, the staff and the facilities that constitute the infrastructure of our College serve one purpose: that our students will grow in the knowledge of the Lord that will one day fill the earth as the waters cover the sea.
