International night an outstanding success

St Peter’s, Campbelltown celebrated the cultural diversity of its congregation in July with an international night.

A survey of its congregation earlier in the year revealed members were born in over twenty different countries spanning all six inhabited continents.

The night was an opportunity for members of the congregation and visitors to learn about the various cultures through food – including culinary delicacies from ten different countries, cultural items and interviews from members representing each continent.

St Peter’s rector the Rev Peter Stavert says highlights of the evening included an acknowledgement of the traditional owners of the land, the Tharawal people, and grace being said in Hindi, Swahili and English.

An African choir established in the past year and representing South Africa, Uganda, Nigeria and Tanzania provided music from the African continent and an Indian group sang in Hindi.

“This year we as a church have often commented on the concept of ‘a house of prayer for all nations’. Now we are rejoicing in the reality of this.”
