God gets Barraba talking

Barraba Anglican Church is still busy following up the contacts made when a 40-member team from Cherrybrook Anglican Church joined them for the second year running for a week-long mission in October.

“While Cherrybrook were here in Barraba, their influence went beyond just running quality events, because they met people, shopped and chatted in town,” says Barraba’s rector, the Rev Daniel Morris.

“Everyone was talking about them, and especially the fact that there were young families who were Christians, changing the perception that church is just for oldies. Conversations were overheard down the street about Jesus and God, and churchgoers were being asked questions or given a hard time!”

Cherrybrook’s rector, the Rev Gavin Poole says his parish felt the benefits of returning to the small town north-west of Tamworth, which they had been praying for since September last year.

“The people of Barraba welcomed us even more warmly than last year, and any suspicion there before has been demolished - I’m really glad we went,” he says.

The mission trips have helped build strong ties between the two churches, with Cherrybrook finding different ways to help the town of only 1200 residents.

“We’ve raised money for large-letter bibles for the older members of the congregation,” says Mr Poole. “We’ve also been praying for them as they’ve been suffering because of the drought, and vice versa.”
