Staff at Newcastle’s Anglican Cathedral were thanking God no one was killed when a giant fig tree crashed to the ground in the worst storms to hit the region in 30 years.

More than a dozen Anglican churches across Sydney and Newcastle sustained some damage.

However church leaders say the overwhelming flood of human need is the main concern.

“There are people whose homes are so severely damaged that they will need to be relocated for months,” says the Archdeacon of Newcastle, David Simpson.

“And so many people are not adequately insured.”

He asked for prayer for small-businesspeople “wiped out” by the floods.

“I don’t know how they will make a living.”

Damage to Anglican Church property in Newcastle Diocese is estimated to reach a quarter of a million dollars.Worst affected was New Lambton parish – including nine aged-care units - which was completely inundated by flood waters.
