Over 100 bikers roared into Parramatta on Sunday August 5 in support of Homeless Persons Week 2007.

Event organiser Grant Howard from the Brotherhood Motorcycle Club and Street Level Christian Community was among them. As a Christian, Mr Howard says it is important for him to reach out to the homeless because “Jesus had compassion for those on the fringes of society and was concerned about their physical and spiritual needs”.

For Mr Howard days like last Sunday are important, not only to raise awareness of the number of people who are sleeping on the streets, but for the homeless also.

With an art exhibition, free morning tea and a sausage sizzle arranged by local churches including St John’s, Parramatta, members of the homeless community were able to participate in the event.

“Just creating a space where people who are homeless could come for the day and mix with people from churches and talk to their local member creates a sense of belonging for those on the fringes,” explains Mr Howard.

“It gives them a chance to engage with people from the community they normally wouldn’t associate with.”
