Killing fuels Sudanese fears
Sudanese Anglicans are hosting a memorial service for one of their brightest hopes – Geoffrey Taban, a Sudanese economics student bashed to death outside a Parramatta nightspot.
The pastor of the Sudanese congregation at Blacktown says the killing of his close relative has fuelled local Africans’ fears about racist attacks.
“Our fears are that some of these attacks are racially motivated,” says the Rev Bernard Suwa. “It may not be true for Taban’s case but the previous killing [of a Sudanese man] in Auburn was clearly a racial attack.”
Wreaths will be laid at the spot where Geoffrey was attacked at 10am on February 3, followed by a memorial service at 2pm at Blacktown Anglican Church.
Mr Suwa says many Sudanese see the killing as part of a pattern.
“Taban’s killing coincided with the unfortunate and unwarranted decision by the Tamworth Council, to refuse Sudanese refugee to settle within their LGA.”
The Anglican Church in Tamworth played a key role in the reversal of the Council’s decision in late January.
Port Hacking potholes no more
Warumbul Road, the notoriously pot-holed track into Anglican Youthworks’ Port Hacking Conference Centres, has finally been tarred. The upgrade will benefit the 12,000 school students who attend camps at the centres, as well as those driving in each weekend for church retreats.
