Anglican Media’s CEO has offered an ‘unreserved’ apology after receiving an unprecedented number of complaints about the cover image used on the last edition of Southern Cross.

In total, Anglican Media received over 20 complaints by phone, as well as dozens more by email and post.
Senior church leaders were amongst those to convey their dismay at the image used. At least two parishes declined to distribute the edition. One returned all their copies.

The majority of complaints said the cover was ‘disrespectful’ and accused Southern Cross of being biased against the Prime Minister.

Allan Dowthwaite, CEO of Anglican Media and Managing Editor of Southern Cross, apologised for the cover, saying: “The decision to illustrate.. was an attempt at satire that clearly failed and I apologise unreservedly for any offence caused – there was none intended.

“I acknowledge that we did not use sufficient care or wisdom in this instance.”
