“When AE (i.e. African Enterprise) introduced this training course, it was like God had come down from heaven.  It has been so awesome and has opened so much of the word to me,” said Sylvia Pillay, a South African church leader and evangelist.

Sylvia, a former Hindu who was converted after her husband’s funeral, is one of 12 South African Christians who are the first people in the world to complete Moore College’s new International Certificate 1 in Biblical Studies. The group graduated in August.

“The International Certificate in Biblical Studies was set up by the Moore College External Studies Department this year to provide a high quality theological training resource for Christians overseas,” said Gary Nelson, External Studies Director at Moore College.

To qualify for the International Certificate 1, students must pass six Moore College PTC units.

“Moore College External Studies has been working in partnership with African Enterprise since 2003 to provide high quality, low cost, time-friendly theological education to African Christian leaders with little or no theological training,” says Mr Nelson

Since then, over 330 pastors and lay leaders, both men and women, from Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and Malawi have commenced units that can lead towards this certificate. Each unit is usually taught full time over one to two weeks by a Moore College graduate. Ten Moore College graduates (or students) have taught these units.

Sylvia was most appreciative of the opportunity. “I was 29 when my husband died and since then I have wanted to go to Bible college but could not afford it.”

Gary is excited by this first graduation of students. “We hope that they will be the first of thousands to receive this qualification.”
