In the Bishops’ Statement of 19 June, 2003 on sexuality and the Anglican Communion issued by the Archbishops and Bishops of Sydney, reference was made to Canon Gene Robinson, the Bishop-elect of New Hampshire. He was described as “a clergyman who left his wife and family for a homosexual relationship”. This description was made in good faith and reflects a common understanding of the situation that was carried in the media, both here and overseas. It has, however, been drawn to our attention that the details are incorrect and that the mutually agreed dissolution of Canon Robinson’s marriage occurred two years before he entered into his homosexual relationship that has continued during the past thirteen years. We are glad to have the opportunity to offer this correction and apologise for repeating the erroneous information. We have written with this apology to Canon Robinson. This correction, however, does not remove our concern about his election.
