Victoria’s Physician Assisted Dying Bill was defeated last month with a vote of 25 to 13. “The Victorian Upper House politicians who voted against this bill should be proud of the role they have played in safeguarding our State from the travesty of turning doctors from carers into killers,” said Australian Christian Lobby Victorian director, Rob Ward.

The ACL is now calling for the Victorian government to step up palliative care support in the light of the defeat. “The vast majority of sick and elderly people have no interest in ending their lives but could greatly benefit from more palliative care resources,” said ACL spokesperson, Lyle Shelton.

Less than a week later, a bill introduced to the Senate proclaiming the unfairness of the rule of Federal Government over ACT and Northern Territory governments was labelled by ACL spokesman Lyle Shelton as a “smokescreen to advance an extreme ideological agenda” – the legalisation of euthanasia in those states.
