“Training our children to use technology to God’s glory”. If ever there was a time where this was essential, it’s now. A new video and study guide has been released for this very purpose. Here’s an intro to the film:

God’s Technology Trailer from Puritan Reformed on Vimeo.

I recently purchased and watched the video and it’s gold. The standard definition version of the video is US$5.99, and the high-def version is $6.99. You can download the video to your computer, or order a DVD. A study guide is also available.

The perspective that Dr Murray brings is important. He doesn’t write-off technology, but uses the illustration that the internet is like ‘lush fields, with poisonous flowers.’ Part of the responsibility of parents is their children to navigate these fields. There is a lot at stake in this navigation - the film begins with the Christian understanding that:

“We realise that the eternal destiny of our children may well be determined by their use or abuse of digital technology.”

The video is divided into four sections:

  1. 4 Biblical principles.
  2. 3 possible responses to the digital revolution.
  3. 7-step training program for our children
  4. How to implement that program in the area of social networking.

I’d recommend watching it with your husband or wife, or with your kids church or youth group leaders. Perhaps you could even put on a special event for parents at your church and nearby churches to come and watch it together. The video does approach the topic from a distinctly Christian perspective, so while it’s not unsuitable for unbelievers, I’d want to let them know in advance that the topic will be addressed from this perspective.
