Young Christian mum Melinda Chiew has given up a career in business publishing to give a lasting gift to families and the environment " an inspired organic baby and kids wear clothing label, Heartsong.

Melinda, co-author of Introducing God and mother to 17-month-old Oliver, was concerned when she discovered that cotton clothing, in which she dressed her son, was potentially exposing him to harmful chemicals.

“More toxic chemicals are used on cotton than any other crop on the planet,” Melinda says. “Skin is the largest absorptive human organ, and baby’s skin is five times thinner than adults. So I started to think about what we put on our skin, and what all these chemicals are doing to our and children’s health.”

But like most young mums, being mindful of her family budget, she found the alternative " organic cotton " was too expensive.
After struggling to find a unique, practical and meaningful present for a friend who had just given birth to her first child, Melinda was stirred to create a new line of baby wear " her goal was a collection that is affordable, faith inspired and kind to children and the environment.
“After doing some research, I became convinced that the baby wear should be made out of organic cotton. After all, children are a gift from God, and deserve the very best. The environment is also a gift and we’re all charged with the responsibility of taking care of it,” she says.
The result was Heartsong, which is designed for budget-conscious parents and gift-givers in mind, with a summer range all under $25.

The collection features colourful, faith-inspired messages that kids will love to wear.

“The clothing designs don’t aim to blatantly ‘Bible bash’, so they have wide appeal, but each design is inspired by biblical themes and gospel songs. They’re also a great conversation-starter with non-Christian friends,” Melinda says.
