What are the Boyer Lectures?

First broadcast in 1959 as the ABC Lectures, and re-named two years later as a memorial to Sir Richard Boyer, the ABC chairman who introduced them, the Boyer Lectures are broadcast each year on ABC Radio National.

Designed to stimulate thought, discussion and debate on a wide range of subjects, prominent Australians are asked to present the results of their work and thinking on major social, scientific or cultural issues.

Previous Boyer Lecturers include Professor Geoffrey Blainey; The Hon. Murray Gleeson, AC; Manning Clark; Eva Cox; and former Prime Minister, Bob Hawke.

In 2005, the Boyer Lectures will be delivered by the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Peter Jensen. His topic, The Future of Jesus, will give Christians new opportunities to share their faith.

‘Tuning In’

One of Archbishop Jensen’s six lectures will be broadcast each week on ABC Radio National, starting Sunday, November 13.

Sydney listeners can tune in to Radio National at 576 AM or click here to locate the frequency that’s best for you.

Or you can have the Archbishop’s lecture streamed live to your desktop from the Radio National website. Instructions on how to listen online are available here.

Transcripts and MP3 recordings of the lectures will be available at the Boyer website as they occur.

Taking part

There are a number of ways you and your group can make the most of the evangelistic opportunities provided by Archbishop Jensen’s participation in the Boyer Lectures.

Here are five ideas to start you thinking…

  1. Download the free promotional flyer and hand it out at your next meeting. The design is free of religious references so it’s ready for use on any occasion. (Get Acrobat Reader 7 to read PDFs).
  2. Download the free promotional poster and put it up at work or at your local community centre. Once again, the design is free of religious references.
  3. Click here to email a friend with everything they need to know about the lectures already added. Add an address and a personal note, and it’s ready to go!
  4. Organise an afternoon or evening discussion group. Listen to the lecture over a cup of coffee and ask ‘What’s one new thing you learned about Jesus…’
  5. Send a copy of the lectures to a friend. MP3 files and PDF copies of the series will be available on the Boyer website at the completion of the series. A copy of the lectures will also be published in book form by Allen & Unwin. An audio CD will also be available through ABC Shops.
