Statement on Stolen Generations Apology
February 13th, 2008

Statement from Archbishop of Sydney on the Government’s apology to the Stolen Generations

The Archbishop of Sydney, Dr. Peter Jensen, welcomes the government’s apology.

Dr Jensen says “As Christians, we know that repentance and forgiveness liberates people to serve one another.”

“I hope the apology will help to reconcile indigenous and non-indigenous Australians and that it will make a real difference in the lives of those affected.”

End of Statement.

(Background for editors/reporters: The Anglican Church of Australia issued an apology to the Stolen Generations in 1998. The Anglican Church in Sydney works through Anglicare in providing help to indigenous communities, runs Gawura, the indigenous campus of St. Andrews Cathedral School, and is sponsoring aboriginal candidates training for full-time ministry. The first student to complete the full course at Moore Theological College was ordained two weeks ago.)
