I have a couple of problems with the site menus.
[list=1]
[*] Menu options are only available if the pointer is over the text, and

[*] Menus open automatically and conceal the text below which, more often than not, is the text I’m trying to get to!
[/list:o]
Have you looked at CoolMenus which seem to work better (they include the option of not opening the menu until you click, and they respond to mouse clicks anywhere in the text cell, rather than just under the text).

They also work correctly for Apple’s Safari browser (the current menus don’t quite display correctly).

I should add that I am in no way connected with CoolMenus, I’ve just used them a few times and have been very happy with the results!

Hi Enkidu,

Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate feedback about the site, its very helpful.

In reply to your points:

1. Yes, I wasn’t satisfied with this either, so I bumped it up my list of priorities and did some work on it today. You can see the changes here (mouse over the menus).
If anyone using IE 5.0 or 5.5 could test these out and report back, that would be *really* helpful.
The changes seem pretty simple, but lists + css != simple :)

2. I know this can be a pain, but its just one of the trade offs of using drop down menu’s I’m afaid.

Thanks for the CoolMenus link, I’m using code style’s menus at the moment and if they don’t work out I’ll look at other options. As for Safari, the code style guy is apparently aware of the bug (see “Known incompatibilities” via the link) so I’ll see what happens. Safari is however still in beta and likely to change, so support would be a little premature at the moment.
These later stages of Safari’s development are quite public so feel free to help out there, if you’re into that sort of thing :)

Edit: Oh, and there’s always Mozilla (or Camino for you OS X types) if anyone’s interested in non-IE browsers. (I use Moz as my primary browser).

Cheers,

Luke

The world would be a better place if we all used mozilla!

The new menus looked good to me (the Safari rendering problem is quite minor, but the whole cell did work as expected).

Or perhaps Firebird (was Phoenix) if you want to keep it lean (and it runs on most popular platforms)!

lol @ ICD’s comments.

Ok I’ve made the changes to the menus site wide (ahh, the joys of editing a single css file) so if there’s any probs (sans the Safari one we know about) please post them here. You may need to refresh to see them (the whole row of each item in the drop down menus is now clickable and hightlights on mouseover).

I’ve also added a stats counting thingy to the main index page, so there might be a split second where it loads, but don’t worry if you see the browser accessing reinvigorate.net. Again, any probs, let me know.

Oh, and the new issue of Southern Cross is online too.

Cheers,
Luke
