John Clack is having an exhibition!
a decade of incredibly dedicated, deeply spiritual work.  oil painting from the old school, built up slowly over months and years.  paintings you can look at forever, meditated responses to some difficult parts of scripture.  the sort of responses you can only make when you work on a few centimetres of detail for a whole day.  And a crucifixion like i don’t think has been painted in this country ever.
I know lots of people who have waited a long time for these paintings to be ready.  maybe someone here has too.

why his name might ring a bell:
When he lived in sydney (a few years ago now) he spoke at a few churches - a long slide show about grace and art and encountering christ.  one of his paintings hangs in St Andrews in Summer Hill (at least i hope it’s still hanging).  and his last exhibition was reviewed here:

if you’re interested, this is his gallery:  http://www.nagyfineart.com.au
and this is his personal site: http://www.johnforresterclack.cjb.net

yeah!

+ excellent!

I love The Tryptich piece, that looks sick. I sure would like to see them in front of me rather than the online version… I get the feeling the online version doesn’t do it justice.

Andrew Lorien,

Thanks for the notification. I liked the drawings. I’ve never heard of John Clack and at first I thought you meant John Clark the Australian comedian and satirist.

Years ago I attended an exhibition in Sydneyt of drawings and watercolours by such recognised masters as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael.

There are a number of teenagers at our church who take art at school & love drawing so I will pass on the web-site for their enjoyment.

thanks again

when you start looking at art online, you realise how much difference a good monitor makes.

i think what’s missing from john’s site is that little box with the details for each work.  that triptych is BIG.  REALLY BIG.  that 21-inch monitor you just bought might seem big, but that’s peanuts compared to how big the triptych is.  i was talking to him while he was preparing the frames, and i think the perimeter is 30 metres.  most of the drawings are at least a couple of square metres too.  they wouldn’t leave much space on your loungeroom wall…

Thanks for the notice Andrew. I have a couple of John Clack’s pieces at home. He’s a really interesting person and a great artist.

As someone who is much more oriented to things written than things visual it was fascinating to talk to him about how he sees the world.

I am definitely looking forward to seeing the triptych. I did see it in progress some years ago. It was impressive then in its semi completed state so it will be great to see the finished piece.

He’s a New Zealander, Angela, but don’t tell anyone!

Cheers,

Hey Andrew,

Nice to hear from you. Stop lurking and contribute MORE brother.

Tell me when did New Zealand secede from Australia?

cheers

Hi… just tsumbled across this old forum

I too have some of John’s works and am a big fan od his works… indeed I almost fell off my chair when I saw his exhibition reviewed in the SMH Spectrum a few Saturdays ago.

if I recall correctly the reviewer made some interesting observations about the influence of ‘calvinism’ on John’s work.
