After a shocking start to my day, I’ve just had the most fun trawling through the gems of web-sites posted on this thread. I could ignore my hubbie, the kids, the dirty dishes and keep on trawling. Sigh.... but life goes on.
Luke, I checked out Jason Kottke’s blog. Loved it and I’m no spring chicken. In regard to your sister, all I can say is “If you need to ask......”
Must away before my this turns into an addiction. Keep them coming!!
Luke beat me to The Onion, which is the greatest fictional news service since Fox News. So I shall have to content myself with the following:
Chef/Jive/Val Speak
This one cracks me up. You enter English in the box and hit submit and it translates it to either Sweedish Chef, Jive or Valley Speak (Like totally!)
Babel Fish
For real languages, Babel Fish rocks. It’s also a great way to include dodgy spanish in your emails. muy muy excelente!
Manly Hydraulics Laboratory
This is very simple. It’s how cold the water is off the coast of Sydney. Makes dipping your toe in a far more bankable proposition
The Simpson’s Archive
Everything you could ever want to know about the Simpsons, except it’s coverage of recent series is patchy. It also dosen’t have this pic , which cracks me up no end.
This is possibly extremely sacriligeous, but I couldn’t help running John 3:16 through Chef/Jive/Val Speak . The results are a scream - especially for the Swedish Chef (though I contend that it should be “vork vork vork”. If you watch a Muppets episode and look carefully at the Chef’s mouth, you can see that he makes a dental “v” rather than a labile “b” consonant)
John 3:16 (ESV)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Chef Speak:
Fur Gud su lufed zee vurld, thet he-a gefe-a hees oonly Sun, thet vhuefer beleeefes in heem shuoold nut pereesh boot hefe-a iternel leeffe-a. Bork Bork Bork!
Jive Speak:
Fo’ God so’s loved da damn wo’ld, dat he gave his only Son, dat whoeva’ believes in him should not puh’ish but gots’ eternal life. What it is, Mama!
Valley Speak:
For God so loved thuh world, mostly, that he gave his only Son, like, that whoever believes in that dude should not perish but have eternal life.
I’ve just realised Rowen’s request for 6 sites was a ploy of the devil - who would suggest such a foul and incomplete number!?!? Why not 7, Rowen? The most perfect number there is??? ;-) ;-) ;-)
An excellent source of news “from an Australian perspective re foreign policy, international relations, defense and security, environment, human rights...” Beats the SMH which I still read on-line daily.
So much to read so little time. God’s creation is magnificent.
Something for everyone. Would keep me, the kids and hubbie happy on our desert island.
Lots to laugh at or at least smile about. Definitely worth more than one visit.
One of my favourite authors, Gilbert Keith Chesterton, is well represented by this web-site and its links. His essay “The Fallacy of Success” written in 1909 should be required reading in this success/fame obsessed age.
www.tear.org.au/ A Christian organisation which supports local Christian groups/charities working in “third world countries”.
Have found all the web-sites either fun/informative/both and a chosen few have been added to favourites on my iMac. So a big THANK you to everyone.
Coming from a Greek Orthodox background I found the orthodox link provided by Ian both informative and incredibly sad. The honour and status accorded to Mary (biblical verses which foretell king David’s coming Messianic king - Jesus- are wrongly ascribed to Mary) was heartbreaking to read as it belongs to Jesus. God is greater than anyone’s misunderstandings or misinterpretation of His word. After all He saved a sinner such as me who had misunderstood until the ripe age of 21 and is still being corrected, trained, rebuked by God’s Word....
Angela: it was not my intention to cause people to get upset with that link; I am sorry it had that effect on you.
While joining in with your love of G K Chesterton, I have to disagree with your view on Mary, but that is for another topic [and I don’t say I disagree lightly...Mary is one of the hugest hurdles I am facing on the way to Orthodoxy - yet, and I say, yet, God is guiding me towards a more Biblical knowledge and love of her - “All generations will call me blessed” and so on...] And as Chesterton was an RC himself, I assume he’d be quite fond of Mary [but who am I to assume?].
Again, my apologies, but it is a site I look at daily and I thought any catholic [small c] lurkers / posters may get something from it.

This thick Greek-Aussie hide is NOT offended. And to do the Greek/Italian thing (think ‘arms waving in the air, voice getting louder and louder as speaker gets more and more excited) “There was absolutely, positively NO offense taken.” You are very sweet and sensitive to care to offer an apology. BTW you are not responsible for my emotions or my response to anything or for the effect of a web-site on me.
To give a more balanced response: I loved the Urban Legend and Chaser web-sites you quoted, amongst the more than 6 (excess can be a wonderful thing) you quoted and have shown them to my husband. We have really enjoyed them.
I can’t (so I will) tell you how special it is to be allowed to read your thoughts and views on the other threads. It is all part of the gift of fellowship that our Lord has so graciously given us. Looking forward to getting to know you and everyone else ‘in love and humility’.
cheers
Angela

Phil. 1:9-11 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ --to the glory and praise of God.
Col. 3:12-14 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Sorry Ian. I forgot to close off your quote to me in my last post. I’ve literally put words in your mouth. Now I wish I could blame the kids, lack of sleep, ANYTHING for this but I can’t. I’m sure you know what you said and what is mine. Oh dear now I’m getting more confused. Time for a coffee break me thinks....
Well, apart from visiting internet banking, hotmail, Anglican Media and the SMH, I don’t go to many other sites! Thanks to those who shared the photography links, I will have to spend some time looking at them!
You can talk about doctrinal issues all you want, but the way to *really* find out about a person is to look at their favourites/bookmarks ;-)
So here we go, exposing the deepest recesses of my soul to public scrutiny…
TORN:
http://www.theonering.net/
and in a similar vein, the LOTR costuming site. Does my geeky seamstressy heart good. Not a pretty website, but insanely detailed breakdowns of the costumes. ::am in love::

Le Monde, for practice
http://www.lemonde.fr/
Knitty, for fabulous knitting patterns
http://www.knitty.com/
Threads magazine, for technique and inspiration
http://www.taunton.com/threads/
and I know that some of these have been mentioned before, and I know that I’ve nearly exceeded my six site limit, but these are some of the Christian ones I have in a favourites folder called “God/check out occasionally”:
