Watching Threads

Is it possible to mark a thread so that you can ‘watch’ it (ie have updates emailed to you) without actually posting to it?

Might be asking a bit much, but I thought I’d ask :)

Hi Glenn,

‘Friad not, I don’t think that feature is in phpBB. There’s the “Email me when a reply is posted” checkbox if you reply to a thread, but I think that’s it.

Sorry!

Hey Luke, I was looking at the url that the BB sends when a watched topic is updated and it sends this link to stop watching http://www.anglicanmedia.com.au/community/viewtopic.php?t=72&unwatch=topic

and, ‘cause I can’t leave well enough alone, I tried putting http://www.anglicanmedia.com.au/community/viewtopic.php?t=51&watch=topic (the freemasonary topic) in and it told me “You are now watching this topic”, and it works too, I get the email updates even though I haven’t posted to it.

Cool eh?

Watching threads

I thought this was something to do with fashion shows -you know, watching threads being worn by models .... oh, never mind.

I simply trust that you two Grand Webmasters know what you are talking about, cause I don’t!!!!

Heh. Good find Glenn, thanks, I might work it into the templates here or something. BTW I’ve been meaning to tell you there’s now an RSS feed for the forums - see the ” xml ” link down the bottom? Yeah ;)

Cool stuff, I’ll add that to feedreader.  Is that a feature of PhpBB or did you have to dig it out of the database? OK, so I’m just throwing around tech terms to confuse IC now! (kidding) ;)

Translation of earlier post:
If you type the address http://www.anglicanmedia.com.au/community/viewtopic.php?t=51&watch=topic
into a browser you can ‘watch’ (that is, receive email updates when someone posts to) a topic that you haven’t actually posted to (Replacing the ‘51’ with the number for the topic you wanted to watch, 51 is the number for the freemasonary thread).

Don’t worry too much about it now, Luke said he’s going to try and put a button on each topic that you can click on to do it.  Much easier :)

Nah its just a simple add on. I’m using Syndirella at the moment, but I like the look of the newer feedreader alphas - as soon as there’s a “Read next unread item” key I might switch back. Either way its a handy way to stay up to date with the forums without refreshing every 5 mins! :)

Just installed Sydirella, I think I like it better actually, the ability to rip straight from a web page is very cool.

I’ve added watch/unwatch links at the bottom of the topic templates (you can see them at the bottom of this page - refresh if you can’t) as per Glenn’s suggestion. Let me know how they go!
