Please don’t tell Owen we went to see Mamma mia and enjoyed it. Don’t even mention it.
Margaret Pomeranz was wrong, by the way.
Great scenery, terrific videos for each song, but definitely screwy message.
The second time was the special ( and Owen will luuuuuv this ) ‘sing-a-long to the lyrics-on-the-bottom-of-the-screen’ version that was on limited theatre release about 4 weeks after the movie began. It was even more enjoyable that second time. Naturally, we then had to go out and get the CD so that we can sing-a-long as we struggle though the mundane traffic. Can hardly wait until the DVD comes out.
We never missed an episode when ‘The Movie Show’ was on SBS. But now that they are on ABC, we hardly ever seem to catch them at all - and don’t miss their opinions either if we miss out. They have become very predictable - and Margaret has become quite vinegary and dismissive of ‘mainstream’.
This is a vile film.. I was duped into going to it. The whole cinema was clapping and transfixed. it inculcated the skewed morals of contemporary society. It iopenly normalised homosexuality and promiscuity. Note how they picked the heart throb, Colin Firth to portray a gayman in a stable relationship.
Yes some of the Abba tunes are wonderful...but this is an anti-christian film in the underlying mesaage it makes. And it was clasified a 12 certificate!

Yes it does illustrate aspects of our ‘contemporary society’ which we Christians disagree with as lifestyles - but when I read the New Testament - especially Acts, Romans and 1 Corinthians - I glimpse those very same issues operating on a wholesale basis throughout society in the first century. There is indeed “nothing new under the sun”.
Our cultural encounters - be it movies, music, theatre or books - can give us opportunities to bring a Christian response in our own minds to the themes presented. And in our discussions with one another and with non-Christians, we can present a Christian perspective using common experiences - such as having seen the same movie or read the same book.
Here in Australia, the film was rated PG ( Parental Guidance recommended ).
I thought the message of the film was that marriage is for clapped-out oldies, but youngsters should get on with enjoying themsleves without its restrictions.

G’day Robert Ian, On your “recomendation” I have just seen “Mamma Mia” ,and I cried and laughed all the way througt. From your comments I take it that you may live in heaven. Where I live people do the best they can with what they’ve got. It is not always perfect “as it is in heaven”.
