Robert Kennedy

1968

I make no comment on the suitability or otherwise of Barack Obama as the next U.S. President - I simply hope that race will not be a factor.

Why Not?”

Hi Rob,

Sadly, I think it is inevitable that race will be a factor in the U.S. presidential election.

Race has already been a factor in some of the state Democratic Party primaries in terms of the voting patterns of the major racial groups.

However, I hope and pray that race will not be the deciding factor.

In a curious way, Obama’s race may have a positive impact in some states by encouraging people to participate in what is a very voluntary voting culture.

Grace & peace,
Terry

Hi again,

This is not a criticism of Rob, who was quoting (or at least paraphrasing) Robert F. Kennedy in his topic title.

Just adding a P.S. in case some are unaware:

With changes in language and culture since the 1960’s, the word Negro is no longer considered an acceptable term to refer to an African-American.

The appropriate term to use now is either black or African-American.

Hi Terry.
But surely it is acceptable to quote what Kennedy originally said.

Hi David,

I may not have expressed myself clearly enough.

Yes, it is certainly fine to quote/paraphrase Kennedy as Rob C. did.....
and the use of the word “Negro” was a quote from Kennedy - not a paraphrase.

That is why I said:

This is not a criticism of Rob, who was quoting (or at least paraphrasing) Robert F. Kennedy in his topic title.

My concern was only to warn others who may respond to this anecdote in the forums or raise it in conversations (or sermons!).

As soon as someone takes the word “Negro” out of the quotes and uses it in their current statements/conversations they have become (unintentionally) offensive.

But to reiterate, I am 100% percent fine with Rob’s original post.

Grace & peace,
Terry

So.... what is the term in the UK?

Hi Dave,

That’s a fair question…

The main term is just black, as far as I know....
although I have seen UK newspaper articles with other terms such as
British African-Caribbean which strikes me as rather convoluted.

On “The Bill” I believe they are called IC2’s. Interestingly, in this crazy PC world, I have never been able to find a list of all their IC racial codes listed anywhere on the Bill website. Yes, I know it’s a TV show ( loosely based on some sort of reality ) - but some truths are indeed stranger than fiction. And PC rules !

For the sake of clarity vis a vis Obama and abortion…

Obama: Mental distress can’t justify late abortion

WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says “mental distress” should not qualify as a justification for late-term abortions, a key distinction not embraced by many supporters of abortion rights.

In an interview this week with “Relevant,” a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions must contain “a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother.”

Here’s Obama’s interview with Relevant Magazine where you get more info & the full context. Probably more reliable than right-wing hit jobs :P

See, I wouldn’t consider that abortion in the first place. It would come under triage ethics, something I’d never want to touch.
Though if Obama supports first term abortions that’s still a problem.

How OT are we going to get?

About a third of the way downthis page, you can find them listed.

Was ‘this crazy PC world’ a reference to Police Constable, or something else?

And no apostrophe needed in IC2s

Cheers,
Andrew

Thanks for that Andrew ! A very useful site indeed - but I still maintain that I was never able to find that stuff on the official site for “The Bill”. The wikia site looks worthy of further exploration :

From your link I now find that, whereas The Bill’s “Police National Computer” has 6 ‘visual classifications’ of people - there is also a “Census Four-Point System” and a “( self-classification ) Census Nine Point System”. Very interesting - and a good resource for trivia night questions !

Cheers, Kevin ( IC 1 )
