hi all, has anyone done any work on Joyce Meyer? We have a lot of people at church who loes her books and I am keen to critique her. Is she on the level or off the tracks?

I have no opinion; sometimes I think she’s fine, other times I do wonder a bit, so I would like to know this too.

BTW Nathan, are you related to the lovely Joanna Killick (whom I haven’t seen for at least 10 years)???

Thanks Jean - your opinion is similar to mine at the moment - it is just the ‘niggling’ feeling I have sometimes when listening to her - she is full of good advice etc - but at the same time i feel she needs critique.

[I don’t know a Joanna Killick - sorry)

This website gives a scathing assessment of Joyce Meyer’s personal wealth.

She is, however, warmly endorsed by Hillsong.

Gordon,

How could you disagree with a pastor getting a $20 million 5 house complex for her family ? The aerial photo of the estate shows one and all that they are simply following Sydney diocesan standards for a rectory. Even down to “ the building and grounds are postcard perfect, from manicured flower beds and walkways to a five-story lighted cross.

How else should one display one’s spirituality ? ( I wonder if there’s also a stable out the back complete with manger ? )

The opening quotes on that site are staggering observations that are hard to deny :

“Christianity began as a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
When it went to Athens, it became a philosophy.
When it went to Rome, it became an organization.
When it went to Europe, it became a culture.
When it came to America, it became a business.”

L. Ron Hubbard (Founder of Scientology) once said “Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wanted to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion.” While our modern day evangelists have not started their own religion, they have unquestionably improved on Hubbard’s idea. Capitalizing on Christianity has proved to be far more lucrative than starting a new religion.

Perhaps Southern Cross could do a critique of the theology taught in her books. After all it is what plenty of people in pew land are reading I suggest.

Here’s some more from that site :

The driveway to the office complex is lined on both sides with the flags of dozens of nations reached by the ministry. A large bronze sculpture of the Earth sits atop an open Bible near the parking lot. Just outside the main entrance, a sculpture of an American eagle landing on a tree branch stands near a man-made waterfall.

A message in gold letters greets employees and visitors over the front entryway:

“Look what the Lord Has Done.”

hi all, thanks for responding to my post - your comments are really helpful. I am happy to hear what others say about her but I really want to hear what she says about herself. So I think I will read some of her latest stuff and see what she says (and what she leaves out). If I come up with anything I will post a reply

i just wonder if Joyce is too popular in the pews for Southern Cross to critique her? ie is it the job of Sthn Cross to do this sort of thing?

I have a tendency to avoid any ‘Christian’ authors who’s books sport a giant picture of themselves on the front cover.

Joyce Meyer = Prosperity gospel + ‘Word-Faith theology’ (ala Benny Hinn et al) + charro, demon-based pop-psychology = a lot of problems. There are some criticisms on the financial side of things on her wikipedia page too. Dodgy stuff.

That’s really quite funny.

Thanks Luke - but I really need to have clear example and assesment of her rather than mere ‘accusation’ - I am not suggesting you have not thought it through to come to this conclusion - I just need to know what makes you feel this way about her - thanks again

I saw that when I read the briefing this afternoon…

Can’t say I like the cover.

At least he isn’t offering me seven keys to abundant living.
