If we click here to read Sola on social action, we find a weak, watered down version of the gospel that allows care for one’s neighbour (in one’s spare time admittedly — but social work as a “hobby” is just a “cover” for really being side-tracked from the gospel).
Now Australian Christians of course know we have God’s golden ticket of assurance that nothing bad could ever happen to us in God’s own country. So why on earth would we ever do anything other than preach the gospel?
Why, the other day I saw a “poor person” on the street and he had the audacity to ask me for some spare change. This of course is a myth — this was just a lazy person who couldn’t be bothered finding work. Some Christians might have directed him to the Salvo’s around the corner or — dreadfully — enabled this young man’s ungodly lifestyle by handing him some money, but I just walked past.
This is God’s country — nothing bad could ever happen. Besides, even though this “poor chap” looked rather thin, I don’t know the future do I? He might have a rich grandparent suddenly die and leave him a vast fortune… we have to recognise the limits of human wisdom here, so even though he looked rather shabby and malnourished, all those lefty do-gooders that would actually FEED him are acting presumptively. We don’t know the future — hungry people are more likely than you or I to want to eat! So frankly I don’t know what all the fuss is about.
Finally, after narrowly avoiding the “shabby man”, I met one of those Greenies talking about economic ruin if we don’t “use our wisdom” and implement a few societal changes. (There’s that presumption again!)
When I tried to explain that the so called “1929 Great Depression” was a hoax perpetrated by gospel hating lefties to try and distract me from my life’s work, he said he’d never seen blinkers as big as mine! Not quite sure what he meant, but at least I got to read a Tim Blair piece at him. That showed him!
