The evangelical response to Lambeth 2008

The latest statement about GAFCON by Peter Jensen is worthwhile for highlighting the distinctive aim of this conference as compared with Lambeth.

It’s useful because it makes it clear that it’s not an attempt to ‘ape’ Lambeth (Peter’s expression) and repeats what’s been said all along, that it’s not about gay sex but about the future of Anglicanism.

G’day,

It looks like that Peter Brain, the evangelical Bishop of Armidale, is going to both conferences.

Yours in Christ,
Mark

The ACL has done well at tracking responses to Lambeth. See the most recent article from Phillip Jensen here.

From the article:

The marshmallow of Anglicanism is melting a little further into the surrounding culture. But remember the words of the Apostle: God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” (2 Timothy 2:19).

.

Anglicanism as marshmallow—not bad. The verse from 2 Timothy is a strong reason for non-attendance at Lambeth, too.

I just can’t understand the Dean’s reasoning. He condemns Lambeth and the Anglican communion for female ordination and the Anglo-Catholic subversion of Anglicanism. However both these groupings are fully represented at GAFCON, where his brother is attempting to re-discover orthodoxy!

For instance the GAFCON handbook only condemns the liberalism of Bishop Schorri and not her gender.
The provinces of Rwanda, kenya and Uganda are pioneers in the filed of female ordination. Southern Cone by incorporating the Canadian Netwoork, now has women priests.

Surely the Dean should be criticising GAFCON for its unbiblical compromises?

The UK Telegraph is reporting that a number of Church of England bishops will be boycotting Lambeth, including Michael Nazir-Ali.

And fair comment from Greg Griffith at Stand Firm.

Gordon,

What’s going on - you seem to be blogging everything in sight!!

Did you get thrown out of home, or something?

Or has GAFCON got you really, really excited, like word on the grapevine - Peter Jensen elected President, oops Presiding Bishop of GAFCON Church of Latter Day Saints?

Cheers, mate

Rush of blood to the head, David. Handed in a 30 000 word thesis on Friday, still got words spilling out uncontrollably.
