Ideas for an active church

I would like to encourage people at our church (myself included) to get out and ‘do something’ as a group of believers to love and serve our local community. Do any of you guys have any ideas or suggestions? Any activities you have been involved with that have worked (or not)? On the face of it our local community is pretty comfy-cosy, but I’m sure there are needy folks all over the place.

Hi Gareth,

I would suggest lookng at practical ways your group can help the less-well-off elderly in your area or those with a disability and those caring for someone with a disability.

Simple things such as mowing lawns, helping with shopping, assisting with travel for an outing or just being someone to talk with.

Church members, seniors clubs and social workers in the area can sometimes provide useful contacts.

Grace & peace,
Terry

At Blacktown Anglican (where I now work), a few of the men will be mowing lawns this Saturday.  Flyers were distributed a couple of weeks ago, then people rang up and gave their details (including why we should do their lawns), and now the men are doing some lawns.  There hasn’t been a huge response, and the people who have rung seem a bit worried that there is some sort of a catch, but seem pleased when I’ve explained that this is just a way for our Church to reach out and help the community.  I’ll be interested to see how it goes.
