“She just said that [skipping + playing] is what children do,” said Roland.

Tiffany wondered about this. As far as she could see, children mostly argued, shouted, ran around very fast, laughed loudly, picked their noses, got dirty and sulked. Any seen dancing and skipping and singing had probably been stung by a wasp.

I’m not surprised - I think most people had already factored in a Labor win into their expectations.

Sometimes I think that people can over-focus on politics, and focus too little on God. The political environment around us changes, but God doesn’t. His love for us and the world doesn’t change, our security in Christ doesn’t change, his promises don’t change, his commands for us to love him and our neighbour (including our enemies) don’t change.

To quote a favourite Colin Buchanan song:

Kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall,
He wisely, wonderfully holds them all,
Blessed are those who on Him call,
‘Cause the Lord don’t change at all.

Haha, nice quote Tia Zheng...it puts things in perspective.

Though I must say that it is quite different for me, I’m only 20 years old and for what it’s worth I cannot remember when Labor was last in power...I’m quite sure life will go on as normal but its something I’ve never really experienced, if there is anything to experience?

What are your thoughts on the election campaign now that it is over?

It felt to me like Labor help seal their victory by (with the exception of work choices) closely imitating the Liberals, to the point where the Liberals could not condemn Labors policy without condemning their own…

Funnily enough, this same thing seems to be happening in the UK but in reverse. The UK Labor government is likely to loose power to the Conservatives who have been adopting more left wing policy that reflects the incumbent Labor government…

Do any Labor supporters feel Labor has backpedaled on any important issues as a means to win government? Or have the differences always been so meager between Labor and Liberal, and the Libs just got unlucky by not being able to play off certain problems within the Labor party? (i.e. unpopular leaders like Mark Latham, Simon Crean and to a lesser extent Beazley)

“…
Far-called, our navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!

If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe--
Such boasting as the Gentiles use
Or lesser breeds without the law--
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!

Extremely disappointed.  I am a small business owner and the IR laws was the main issue for me, as I think that Labor were not that different to the Liberals on a lot of the other main issues.

I think that the Liberals lost the election rather than Labor winning it and this was not due so much to bad policy but rather a bad campaign with too many mistakes and slip ups.  And Howard should probably have handed over to Costello 12 - 18 months ago, bet then I have thought this for a while.

Tia mumbled:

P.S. Sorry if I deafened you!! I love youse all!!!

(Rob & Tia embrace, dancing around in a haphazard manner, until they fall in a heap - everyone else looks away embarrassed)

Michael (Allison) - I can relate to that having grown up with a ‘Liberal’ (Hah) Government that had been in power for 23 years.

Among the ‘dumbest’ things that Howard’s mob did when they first came in was to remove federal support for the teaching of Asian languages in High Schools and the downgrading of Radio Australia’s services.

Under any criteria this was just plain DUMB!

No longer will we have ’Shirley Temple‘ as Foreign Minister, whose greatest achievement is to speak really bad high school French.

Now we have a Prime Minister who speaks fluent Mandarin - and despite what Shirley may think - that is something to be proud of.

Am I making any sense?

Excuse me - I’m going to have another dance with Tia.......................

With respect, Rob, might I suggest that pride is generally inadvisable amongst us mortals?

In the context of your previous remark that a certain person might take “legitimate pride” in speaking Mandarin, surely we ought reflect that pride generally goes before a fall (on my part, I’m ready to acknowledge that hubristic pride in various economic figures led to my party’s recent downfall.)

Gee, I dunno…

Country which is our most important trading partner…

How many leaders of other countries (name one) can speak to President Hu Jintao in his own language…

Yeah, I reckon if we can take pride in anything, this is something worthwhile.

Please Michael, no sour grapes…

After all,

He is your Prime Minister too!

Disappointed, but not surprised.  There’s a certain frivolity, it seems to me, in this particular exercise of changing our government.  No solid reasons for it; no sea change in national mood - not where I am, anyway.  Just boredom; and a fresher face and a good slogan.

But that is how we live now.  And it was hardly unexpected.

Having changed government when times are good, I wonder how the Australian people will treat their leaders when things take a turn for the worse - as they are sure to do, sooner or later.

Alan,

What a depressing thought…

C’mon: It’s not the end of the World!

Like the song says…

If life seems jolly rotten
There’s something you’ve forgotten
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you’re feeling in the dumps
Don’t be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that’s the thing.

And...always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the light side of life…
