For those not in the know, Facebook is a social networking site, like the immensely popular MySpace but twice as easy to use and half as annoying. Basically you sign on and then find other people you know to send messages. There are a whole heap of programs you can put on your personal page as well.
A recent article by Toby Young in The Spectator (UK) suggested that Facebook was essentially middle class/intellectual; whereas MySpace for for hip, cool, happening youth. Toby Young drew particular attention to the feature on Facebook which enables you to write down what you are doing at any particular time, e.g. “reading A la Recherche du Temps Perdu” or “Playing a Mozart Sonata” if you get my drift.
Coming as I do from a “Betamax Loser” family of the 1980s video wars, I’m glad I chose the right one this time.

i.e. Facebook.
I guess that’s why I’m on Myspace! That plus the fact that I have (real life as well as cyber)) friends on Myspace
I too feel the plight of no friends, apart from one who’s taken pity on me and asked me to be her friend. I am faring no better at kindergarten the second time around...but in this modern age of cyberspace Ihave an option open to me that I didn’t in the 70s - cyberidentity theft! There is another Australian Kathryn Roach on facebook, who appears to have lots of friends, so I might instead pretend to be her, even though it means moving to melbourne...or possibly even westchester NY or Birmingham alabama. I didn’t realise I travelled around so much;)....But essentially, Facebook is a great equaliser that reduces us all to that plaintive plea oft cried in kindy - “will you be my frend?”
David, I’m the only one in Perth (so far) - I haven’t put any info up on my profile yet because I’ve decided since I’m virtually (pun totally intended) friendless there’s no one there to read it. Like the tree in the forest, if there’s no one there to read it does the text appear?
