Kevin Rudd says his new campaign T-shirts will cost you just $7 each.

But the bill Kevin will eventually send you will be more than double that :

Adult Male T-Shirt Extra Large - XL $7.00

Postage and Handling $8.00
( GST included $1.36 )

Shopping Total $15.00

Is that an omen?

Cheers, Kevin

as yet i don’t think howard007 is selling t-shirts…

But if they do decide to sell them, at least they’ll be starting that enterprise within a strong and growing economy. That should be a good start for any new business initiative.

Cheers, Kevin

I guess the only part of the two speeches that worries me is Kevin Rudd’s idea to let in many Iraqi refugees to our community.

Islam has never successfully integrated into Western societies, and only more trouble could be in store for us, I am afraid to say.

I know this is not a good christian response, but when I look at middle eastern crime stats, I worry. Moslems who have been here for many years have not changed to take on christian values. It is a worry.

A few thoughts…

Ken Austin - 10 August 2007 10:01 AM

I guess the only part of the two speeches that worries me is Kevin Rudd’s idea to let in many Iraqi refugees to our community.

I thought that we are already doing that under Howard. There certainly seem to be plenty of Iraqis about in comparison to a few years ago.
Our church didn’t take part in the webcast (despite it being in Kevvie’s electorate, and his old church!), but what I gather from the news this morning, he was specifically talking about Iraqi Christian refugees. Surely that’s good news for Christians?

Islam has never successfully integrated into Western societies, and only more trouble could be in store for us, I am afraid to say.

Bit of a sweeping statement. And I think that the influx of Islamic refugees to western countries is an opportunity that churches seem to have missed, in general. If we send missionaries to Muslim countries, they are usually breaking the law by preaching the gospel, and risk imprisonment or even death. But if they are coming to us, it’s much easier! It’s also more effective, because they can take the gospel back to their country in ways that ‘westerners’ can’t. The Islamic world needs Christ as much as anyone else. Them coming to us removes a lot of barriers!

I know this is not a good christian response, but when I look at middle eastern crime stats, I worry. Moslems who have been here for many years have not changed to take on christian values. It is a worry.

Some have not changed, but it’s going a bit far to imply that the majority haven’t. And why should they change? They bring who they are, and add that to what it is to be Australian. Just as the Vietnamese, Southern Europeans, Chinese and British did before them.

It would be great to take Christian Iraqis. Lets take those who have suffered persecution from Islam greatly, from what I have heard from Iraqi Christians that I have met here. This I would applaud, and if Kevin Rudd is saying this, I agree. (sorry I did not hear the podcast, but read it in the papers)

Or maybe… we should ask prospective Muslim Iraqi refugees to undergo a course in introductory Christianity basics before being admitted here. It may be a good way to evangelise some people, and let them hear the gospel of Jesus Christ for the first time. If they refuse to listen, then maybe they should seek asylum in another Islamic country.

If we took Iraqi refugees, it would obviously be on a non-discriminatory basis - so most of them would be Muslim.

One problem with the application of The Hague Refugees Convention to people from Islamic countries is that it means admitting people who may be persecuted because of their opposition to secular liberal democratic society.

A number of refugees from Algeria have successfully sought asylum in Great Britain on the basis that because they are Islamic fundamentalists dedicated to the violent overthrow of the Algerian Government, they face a well-founded fear of persecution in Algeria.

It would be funny if it wasn’t true.

I’m not saying by any stretch that there would be a significant number of such people, but then it only takes one.  And given the fuss over deporting even one Indian doctor because of his blood ties to suicide bombers, you could expect the SMH, the ABC, Julian Burnside and all the other usual suspects to defend to the death Australia’s right to commit civilisational suicide in the event we were to be caught in such a situation again.

It’s worth repeating that the 12,000 refuges Australia takes per year makes us one of the most refugee-friendly countries on earth.  During the past decade, the demographic basis of Australia’s society has changed remarkably - we now have significant populations of migrants from African countries most of us hadn’t heard of a few years ago.  The man who serves me at Hungry Jacks is very likely to be a survivor of genocide in The Sudan.

Considering we are, as well all know, the most bigotted racist country on the planet under the evil regime of Lord Voldemort, we haven’t done too badly have we?

(Hope everyone doesn’t mind a bit of friendly hyperbole on a Friday afternoon).
