Many of you know I’m pretty conservative politically, but I a couple of years ago I was really convicted (from the Law of Moses) that we should show more compassion to refugees. We are a wealthy country and can afford to be generous.

Those who abuse our generosity should, of course, be punished.

It will be interesting to see how the people-smugglers respond.  The traffic has, after all, all but ceased - arguably in response to Australia’s tough policies.
