Battlestar Galactica, God & Mormonism
Just found this topic… I vaugely remember the original series and the follow-up series with flying motorbikes (way cool!).
I have really been enjoying this series. I love the fact that none of the characters are black or white (except maybe Aaron Doral). I think that’s one of the themes in the series: everyone is flawed.
You can learn alot more about what they’re trying to do with the series by reading the series manifesto by Ronald Moore (Exec Producer). (The blog by the Moore and behind scenes videos also fill in some gaps). The main point is: make everything realistic, and put the same rigour into the story/editing/characters as for a good drama series, like the West Wing or Lantana.
On the Cylons, I expect that like the humans, they are more complex than they seem at first. I think the end of Episode 9 (as well as the conflict inside each of the Boomers) hints that the different Cylons may have different goals. Perhaps the humanoid-cylon models fall into castes like the Minbari and Xindi.
According to the Wikipedia entry on the new BSG “Moore has stated that in the second season, he wants to resolve the many cliffhangers from the first, while examining the Cylons and the religious themes already introduced in more detail.”
I don’t think BSG is making simple equations wrt religion. On the human side you see a spectrum of belief from devout/superstitious (Starbuck?) to the formal (Adama(s)?) to the unbeliever (Baltar).
There is a brief discussion of the religious and mythological references of the original series in the Wikipedia.
Incidentally I loved the ending with Baltar not telling us whether Ellen is a Cylon or not.
BTW My first post!
