If you would like to reply to a discussion or start a new topic for discussion, you need to register. There’s a number of ways you can register, the two easiest are:
1. Following the prompts if you try to post a message unregistered, or
2. You can click the “Register an account “ link, above:
Registering is a fairly quick process, the only information that is required is a username (we’d appreciate it if you use your full name (eg John Smith) in fact we insist on it), password and email address.
Once you’ve entered that information, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Submit”. You will then have to wait (sorry) until I approve it. Then you should receive an email confirming your registration. Click that link and you’re done!
If you need any help please email me:

Thanks!
Now, the tone of this thread ought to be a bit different from the “Forum posting Policy” thread, I feel. That one is all about politeness. I’m not sure what this one is about, but there we are.
He was actually the commander of the Australian 8th Inf Div at Singapore in 1941, and fled the seige leaving the rest of the troops under British Cmmd (who eventually surrendered to the Japanese).
I think that’s how “Gordon Bennett” (said in an Alf Garnett accent) became a pejorative term - but perhaps it is rhyming slang for something else that I haven’t recognised.
Hmm, so maybe dis fread wil ‘ave a cockney fheme? Alf our luck, eh Dave?
[quote author="Gordon Cheng"]That’s destined to become an ould joke, David.
Who’s Gordon Bennett?
must be a British thing. It’s a cry of exasperation where I come from.
So, for example, if you come (hypothetically) across the umpteenth multi-thousand word posting from the same poster, despite having pleaded with him for brevity, you might exclaim “Gordon Bennett!!!”.
