Australian poll expert Malcolm Mackerras, 2004:

On Monday, December 20, 2004, the Electoral College will meet and 327 votes will be cast for John Kerry and 211 for George W. Bush.

First, he will win 260 votes by carrying every state carried by Al Gore in 2000. Second, he will win 27 votes in Florida, four in New Hampshire, 11 in Missouri, 20 in Ohio and five in Nevada.

On January 20, 2009, Barack Hussein Obama will be inaugurated as president of the US, succeeding George Walker Bush …

When the electoral college meets in December, I predict that 355 votes will be cast for Obama and 183 for the Republican candidate, John McCain.

Mackerras previously predicted a Gore win in 2000 and a Hillary Clinton candidacy. But now he’s all for Obama … mainly due to him marrying someone of whom Mackerras approves:

The main thing I like about Obama is the fact that he married a traditional American black woman. It would have been so typical of the Obama style of man to marry a white woman. Had he done so I would have seen very little to admire in him.

But he married a black woman who, presumably, is descended from slaves. I am so looking forward to the sight of a black family occupying the White House.

There is so much that is so wrong with those two paragraphs, but start with this: a “traditional American black woman”? Or perhaps this: “It would have been so typical of the Obama style of man to marry a white woman.”

The scene with the cranky blond-haired Republican crank telling old McCain that Obama is an “A-rab” truly frightens me… I mean, this country has the most powerful military arsenal in human history, and they let people like her vote?

Seemingly ignorant folk do alarm most others - and elections sure do bring them out of the woods - or from “Deliverance” country ( “ding-a-ding-ding-ding” )- but, in a democracy, even those with the most outrageous views can vote.  So I’m not sure that anyone can stop her. But I doubt that she’s a swinging voter !

Democracy - beautiful one day - imperfect the next.

Much of the U.S. school education system and much of their popular culture is inwardly focused to a huge extent.

This means some people there are very ignorant about anything or anyone that has an international aspect.....and I agree that can be worrying.

Fortunately, the vast majority of the Americans that I have been privileged to meet have not been at all like the crank you referred to.
