We trying the following at present...

FAITH

OF GREATER WORTH THAN GOLD

1 PETER 1:7

Hi Sandy,
There could also be a current sign idea in another 1 Peter reference to gold (and silver) in 1 Peter 1:18-19:

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.
[NLT quoted, for accessibility]

Here is a first rough attempt:

THE PRICE GOD PAID FOR YOU
WAS NOT MERE GOLD OR SILVER
IT WAS THE PRECIOUS LIFE
OF JESUS CHRIST

I’m not sure whether to add even more to be read on the sign
by including the Bible reference.

Grace & peace,
Terry

Mentone baptist has a new sign. For 40 years we’ve been known in our part of Melbourne as the Church with the sign. We’ve taken down the old sign and put up a new one.

here’s a link to some pics:

Hi Murray,

That’s a pretty impressive looking sign. What was on the old one ? How different is this new one ? Is there anywhere else where folk can see the phone number or website address ? How do you display service times ?

“ When you drive by it looks very modern and even lights up at night” - that’s great about the lighting idea.

Cheers, Kevin

glad you like it. The old sign was similar size. On one side it said ‘Jesus Saves’, and on the other, ‘Christ Our Hope’. The colours were gross, it was rusting and very tired in appearance. What we want to say to the community is that something is happening in this church. we’re changing, moving forward with time, but our message is the same. So, new sign, same message.

Service times are not on the sign (given they may change), they are posted on the church building which is visible from the road. Website does need an appearance, although if people google us, it’s very easy to find the site

A few ideas for Christmas.

1.  GET READY FOR CHRISTMAS:
START DENYING JESUS NOW

2.  YOU THINK CHRISTMAS IS COSTLY?
THE SON OF MAN GAVE HIS LIFE AS A RANSOM FOR MANY

3.  NO ROOM LEFT IN THE HOTEL?
JESUS KNOWS THE FEELING
(our church building is located behind a large hotel)

4.  GET A GREAT SAVING THIS CHRISTMAS!
(1 TIMOTHY 1:15)

5.  GET READY FOR A VISIT FROM THE GREAT GIFT-GIVER

6.  SANTA RETURNS EVERY YEAR -
JESUS WILL ONLY RETURN ONCE

7.  SPEND YOUR GOLD
MYRRHMER AT THE COST
THEN COME TO YOUR INSENCES:
MAKE JESUS THE PRIORITY THIS CHRISTMAS

8.  HE SEES YOU WHEN YOU’RE SLEEPING
HE KNOWS WHEN YOU’RE AWAKE
HE DIED FOR ALL YOUR SIN
SO TRUST IN HIM FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE!

9.  THOSE THAT TRULY CELEBRATE HIS BIRTH
ARE THOSE THAT CELEBRATE HIS DEATH

Hi Ben
Some great work there, although I wouldn’t use No. 1 as is—likely to be seen as attacking (if it’s understood).  I especially liked 2 & 8.

Hi everyone,

I have been thinking about something to tie in with the current gyrations in Financial Markets.

Any thoughts on this or other suggestions in this area:

THIS WEEK’S INVESTMENT ADVICE:
STORE UP FOR YOURSELVES
TREASURES IN HEAVEN
NOT TREASURES ON EARTH
.........................- JESUS CHRIST

This is Matthew 6:20a plus a summary of Matthew 6:19a.

P.S. Welcome back Ben!

Grace & peace,
Terry

If you want a straight text, what about…

Solomon’s investment advice…
Cast but a glance at riches,
and they are gone,
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle.
(Prov 23:5)

Another word to play on is ‘futures’

There’s always Ecclesiastes 4:6:

Better one handful with tranquility
than two handfuls with toil
and chasing after the wind.

Might be a bit subtle for a street sign though.

Hi Kristen,

May I suggest that is more than just subtle for most people anyway - without confusing passers by.

I looked up Eccles 4 - and then read on until Eccles 6 :11 which had this sage advice for those who would put up signs outside their church :

The more the words,
the less the meaning,
and how does that profit anyone?

BTW why does my abbreviation always conjure up images of the Goons ?
And why is there no short word to use in place of ‘abbreviation’ ?

Cheers, Kevin

Ooh, it’s the famous Eccles! Just watch out for the dreaded batter pudding hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea…
