I had thought that this topic had been dropped…
The most helpful criticism we could ever give them is for them to turn back to the Bible, to follow what it says, and to preach the truth, and not muddle it up with ideas like the Prosperity Gospel (which is no Gospel at all). How is saying come back to the Bible an unhelpful thing to do? (I believe that plenty of helpful points have been made here, to that and other ends)
On the topic of whether rebuking is having any effect or not, I’d suggest that there are a lot at Hills who see themselves as the model Church, and the suggestion that they are doing or could be doing anything wrong is usually met with an immediate shut down and refusal to listen to what the other party has to say.
Now this isn’t a rule and doesn’t always happen, but there are many I know from there who refuse to even discuss the idea that maybe, just maybe, they don’t have all the answers and could improve a few things here and there.
No Church is perfect, because we as people are imperfect and sinful. This is a lesson I think some there are still yet to learn…
What is the Church, the body of Christ. What is the body of Christ, Christians, the people/followers of Christ. What are we all stained by as people, our sins which can only be washed clean by the blood of Jesus. It’s fairly logical.
Also, it’s all well and good to bag people out for having criticisms, but if they’re not willing to listen to those criticisms, then aren’t they contributing to the problem too? Expecting everyone to listen to you (by you I mean Hillsong/its respective representatives & members) yet not being willing to hear what others have to say is far from wise and in many ways is nothing short of disrespectful.
Another point is that the media isn’t as evil and “anti-Christian” as some like to make it out to be. Yes, there are some elements who do pursue an anti-Christian agenda, however, writing them all off as being of the same vein is far from helpful nor a fair representation of reality. It is actually extremely damaging to our outreach as Christians to those in the Media to suggest this and merely reinforces the age old “Christian vs. Media” divide which has existed for far too long.
I would agree however Brooke that prayer is very important, and that we should pray for our Brothers and Sisters at Hillsong as I, and many others I’m sure already do. The question though is whether they will be willing to listen to God and allow His will to lead them rather than the will of any one person or group of people.
This is a question neither you, nor I, nor anyone else can answer and which will be clearly be responded to/answered by in the direction & decisions they take as a movement in the months/years to come (eg. if they dropped Osteen from Conference ‘09, that would be a clear sign of a step in the right direction and a sign of good things to come!)
I dare suggest that one of the reasons why some Christians are critical of Hills is due to the way in which so many have sought to lovingly bring them back to the truth yet have been shut down on the most whimsical of reasons - this shows that change must occur for them as much as it must for those who are critical of them.

perhaps nick because i know you personally and know your character i do not intend to be speaking directly to you..
On a more personal note Brooke, I’d ask that you refrain from character assessments of the above nature on such a public forum like this. I would request that you remove this section and any others like it ASAP.
