Apocalyptic scenario’s the 3rd

If we click here to read Sola on social action, we find a weak, watered down version of the gospel that allows care for one’s neighbour (in one’s spare time admittedly — but social work as a “hobby” is just a “cover” for really being side-tracked from the gospel).

Now Australian Christians of course know we have God’s golden ticket of assurance that nothing bad could ever happen to us in God’s own country. So why on earth would we ever do anything other than preach the gospel?

Why, the other day I saw a “poor person” on the street and he had the audacity to ask me for some spare change. This of course is a myth — this was just a lazy person who couldn’t be bothered finding work. Some Christians might have directed him to the Salvo’s around the corner or — dreadfully — enabled this young man’s ungodly lifestyle by handing him some money, but I just walked past.

This is God’s country — nothing bad could ever happen. Besides, even though this “poor chap” looked rather thin, I don’t know the future do I? He might have a rich grandparent suddenly die and leave him a vast fortune… we have to recognise the limits of human wisdom here, so even though he looked rather shabby and malnourished, all those lefty do-gooders that would actually FEED him are acting presumptively. We don’t know the future — hungry people are more likely than you or I to want to eat! So frankly I don’t know what all the fuss is about.

Finally, after narrowly avoiding the “shabby man”, I met one of those Greenies talking about economic ruin if we don’t “use our wisdom” and implement a few societal changes. (There’s that presumption again!)

When I tried to explain that the so called “1929 Great Depression” was a hoax perpetrated by gospel hating lefties to try and distract me from my life’s work, he said he’d never seen blinkers as big as mine! Not quite sure what he meant, but at least I got to read a Tim Blair piece at him. That showed him!

In the 1960’s oil discovery peaked. In 1983 consumption permanently overtook discovery, and 25 years later we burn 5 times the oil we discover.

In 2008 most geologists calculate world oil production will peak and head into permanent decline within the next 10 years. Yet rather than rush-build electric rail, Kevin Rudd gives us 10 billion dollars to buy plasma screen TV’s.

Welcome to the end of the oil age!

There’s no apostrophe in ‘scenarios’.

Dave, do you really think a sneering, sarcastic piece like this is going to win anyone over to your cause?

No Craig, I don’t — which is why I’m wondering at the behaviour of a certain moderator who started the last 2 “Apocalyptic scenario’s’s"… and keeps quoting Tim Blair pieces even after they’ve been dead horsed. It seems like sarcasm is the cool currency here, I was just joining in the exchange.

Dave, if you want to take the MM people to task for whatever reason, prob best to do it over there in the comments.

As for this thread, the horse is still dead (and that goes for everybody) :P

Hi Luke,
That’s the problem with sarcasm… people so often misunderstand what is actually being said.

I’m not heckling the Sola post at all! Tony made some great points on our social conscience naturally moving us to engage social issues. Although gospel work and social work are 2 different things with different aims… it’s not an “either/or” dichotomy the way many seem to think. It’s a good article, and I encourage people to read it and the comments.

If you re-read my opening post keep in mind I created a character that was the very antithesis of what I believe, and I was sending up the character’s reaction to the Sola post, not the Sola thread itself. I was just sending up the false dichotomy many Christians gleefully leap to when implying it’s gospel OR social issues.

I was also questioning the value of certain posting styles… this being the 3rd in a series… but that horse has long since bolted…

Anyway, that apostrophe is REALLY starting to bother me.

The kids from Mad Max 3 knew this day would come, when an apostrophe and apocalypse would someday combine into the “Aposcalisp”.
