Are we (Sydney Anglicans) holding some sort of appeal for Burma? If not, where do people suggest we should donate?

We got an email at work on Friday afternoon from the Archbishop’s ORAF-I put the poster on the noticeboard and put some copies out for people to pick up, but it was too late for the wekly news -I will probably write it up for next week (If that’s OK with the boss!).  Let me know if you don’t get it and I’ll flick it on to you tomorrow, but your parish office should have it-most offices would have got it too late to publicise this week but they will have the email so hopefully it will be widely advertised next week.

If you want to do something immediately, here is an opportunity. A friend of mine is on a short-term mission in Thailand. There are some Burmese nationals in his church who are going to take supplies over the border next week. If you want to make a donation, they will be able to purchase additional stuff to take across.

I can vouch for this fellow, he has been a member of our church for a couple of years and he was in my home group this year. He’s a good guy.

check out Baptist World Aid here http://www.shareanopportunity.org/default.asp?contentID=1002727

Cyclone Nargis causes massive destruction in Burma - Baptist World Aid Australia collecting funds for relief efforts…

The Baptist church has a strong following in Burma with over 4,500 churches and 1,000,000 members. Dr. Les Fussell, National Director of Baptist World Aid Australia reported that “Australian Baptists and Baptists around the world are looking to work through local Baptist churches and organisations to deliver aid and relief material. The Myanmar Baptist Convention is the largest Baptist group in the Asia Pacific region and has a well established aid and development department. Baptist World Aid Australia is also in contact with other capable local partners to discuss the implementation of the relief effort.”

We are also currently collecting funds to be made available for relief and rehabilitation activities. So far we have been in limited contact with local organisations within Burma (Myanmar), however discussions are already underway regarding how we can partner with them to get aid to those most affected. As soon as more information is available, along with details of our planned response, this page will be updated. Please check for updates.

Aid support will take the form of immediate relief, including provisions for temporary housing, medical help, clean water and sanitation. However, the re-establishment of normal life in the cyclone devastated communities will also require long-term rehabilitation efforts.

Prayer is desperately needed for the nation of Burma as it suffers in the aftermath of this disaster. Please be praying:

• For the provision of essential aid and shelter for those affected.

• That foreign aid organisations are allowed speedy entry into the country to provide the help needed.

• For the approval of visas for the Australian Rescue24 team members who are waiting in Bangkok.

• For comfort for those who are grieving.

Regarding Burma, UNICEF and CARE were there pre-disaster, and are still there, so you can donate to them if you haven’t picked an aid organisation yet.

“She just said that [skipping + playing] is what children do,” said Roland.

Tiffany wondered about this. As far as she could see, children mostly argued, shouted, ran around very fast, laughed loudly, picked their noses, got dirty and sulked. Any seen dancing and skipping and singing had probably been stung by a wasp.
