OK, so as an evangelical I know we are all saved only by Jesus death and resurrection.

But some recent stuff in the news has Joy and I really emotionally searching certain themes for comfort, and not finding much.

For instance, those that have not had a chance to hear the gospel.... is there really no “nod and a wink” as CSLewis once said to how someone responds to the light which they did have? Children, babies, the mentally retarded, what’s the deal?

The ABC news just showed the very moment a Chinese mother waiting outside the collapsed school finds her little girl dead… and I’m wondering if that little, little girl ever had a chance to hear the gospel, and what happens if she didn’t?

I know we are all sinners, and yet.... where’s a good sermon on this? A good catalogue of online resources because Joy and I sure would appreciate something now. I think I know the facts in my head, just having trouble getting them down into my heart…

777 dealt with this issue very well. Have a read if you can get your hands on a copy. I don’t know if it will be much of a comfort though.

Hi Dave, I would say live in the mystery. We don’t have all the answers this side of heaven, and we don’t need to.

Romans 2 does it for me:

12All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) 16This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

I think the HCSB translation expresses this a bit more clearly and fluently in contemporary English than most others:

Romans 2:14-16 :

So, when Gentiles, who do not have the law,
instinctively do what the law demands,
they are a law to themselves even though they do not have the law.

They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts.

Their consciences testify in support of this,
and their competing thoughts either accuse or excuse them
on the day when God judges what people have kept secret,
according to my gospel through Christ Jesus.
