Cyclone Nargis causes massive destruction in Burma - Baptist World Aid Australia collecting funds for relief efforts…
The Baptist church has a strong following in Burma with over 4,500 churches and 1,000,000 members. Dr. Les Fussell, National Director of Baptist World Aid Australia reported that “Australian Baptists and Baptists around the world are looking to work through local Baptist churches and organisations to deliver aid and relief material. The Myanmar Baptist Convention is the largest Baptist group in the Asia Pacific region and has a well established aid and development department. Baptist World Aid Australia is also in contact with other capable local partners to discuss the implementation of the relief effort.”
We are also currently collecting funds to be made available for relief and rehabilitation activities. So far we have been in limited contact with local organisations within Burma (Myanmar), however discussions are already underway regarding how we can partner with them to get aid to those most affected. As soon as more information is available, along with details of our planned response, this page will be updated. Please check for updates.
Aid support will take the form of immediate relief, including provisions for temporary housing, medical help, clean water and sanitation. However, the re-establishment of normal life in the cyclone devastated communities will also require long-term rehabilitation efforts.
Prayer is desperately needed for the nation of Burma as it suffers in the aftermath of this disaster. Please be praying:
• For the provision of essential aid and shelter for those affected.
• That foreign aid organisations are allowed speedy entry into the country to provide the help needed.
• For the approval of visas for the Australian Rescue24 team members who are waiting in Bangkok.
• For comfort for those who are grieving.
