Why doesn’t anyone ever approach the subject of gluttony? Gluttony and homosexuality in God’s eyes are two equal sins…

Is it true that no-one addresses it, Sarah? I’ve always thought of gluttony as a subset of greed, which I often hear spoken about.

Phil 3:18-19 is interesting in linking gluttony to other sins too:

18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.

There, gluttony is linked to being an enemy of the cross of Christ, and the idea of being an enemy of the cross of Christ is frequently preached on, in different ways.

Ok, so “no one” was a slight exaggeration and yes you have a good point. But let’s be frank - together you put a gay preacher and a preacher who is into gluttony “1. a person who eats and drinks excessively or voraciously. “ (source dictionary.com) and who is perceived as the sinner?

Proverbs 23:20-22

20 Do not join those who drink too much wine
or gorge themselves on meat,

21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor,
and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

I don’t know the answer to your question. But I’d much rather sit next to a gay person in my choir than a drunk person! (I’ve done both)

The point is that both must repent of their sin and STOP doing it, however much they tempted. The homosexual/lesbian lobby would argue that they aren’t sinning, and that God does not see it as sin.

I challenge you; next time you see a christian driving an expensive and frivolous motor vehicle motor vehicle, tell them they are guilty of greed… and see what happens.

I’m searching, but still not able to find the part in my Bible about frivolous motor vehicles.

If I do I’ll have to reconsider that special deal I got offered on the Wiggles Big Red Car.

Actually a couple of years ago I started a topic called “Lord of the Fork”. It covered this topic.

Trouble was, at the time, I was attacked by some women who insisted that I was picking on fat chicks.
(Which I wasn’t)

It was from “bible.com” and from this link What does the bible have to say about gluttony?

Do you need help to read your bible?

Many cars expensive, but there are also many which are frivolous… like Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini etc. Why would any christian want to own such a vehicle? I would rather go cheaper and use the money on something useful… like housing the poor.

David Ashton, people like you were sainted years ago. God bless you.

this link, also from www.bible.com may be helpful in understanding What does the bible have to say about homosexualty?
It give the standard biblical answers, but maybe does not allow, or give some pity to a section of the population who are born with homosexuality built-in to their make up. (if this is a valid argument)

David Ashton, people like you were sainted years ago. God bless you.

Whilst I’m not sure what you mean I’ll take it as a compliment.

Matthew 25:34-46 (ESV)
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.  [35] For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, [36] I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ [37] Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?  [38] And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?  [39] And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ [40] And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
[41] “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.  [42] For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, [43] I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ [44] Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ [45] Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ [46] And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

This is one example of what I mean. There is also a passage (I’ve forgottten where!) that says there is no point to tell a person the good news if they are hungry and you don’t feed them first - apart from the hypocrisy.

Reminds me of my most hated “Chick” comic, where the little homeless kid is dying in an alleyway (more or less the ancient “Little Match Girl” story) and a passing Christian gives her a pamphlet telling her Jesus loves her in time for her death and glorification. I thought this the most disturbing misrepresentation of evangelicalism ever.

Ahh it’s so great that a conversation topic can turn from homosexuality to fast cars!

I understand everyone’s point, I think the best approach in all this is to love one another, be accountable to one another and follow the leadings of the Holy Spirit.

How do you determine what these are? What’s your criteria?

Hi David
I’m reasonably familiar with the Bible, but I don’t think there is a single passage which says this. I think you could make a case for it, but based on looking at an overall view of the Bible’s teaching, rather than a chapter and verse thingy.

But I’m happy to be proved wrong. Keeps me humble.

I wonder if you could have been thinking of James 2?

Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

But this passage doesn’t quite say that we can’t share the gospel without firstly feeding a person, as far as I can see.
