Who else loves Eurovision? C’mon—don’t be shy!

I’m still going through the videos , but I’m quite impressed with Sweden, Belgium and Cyprus—and I think Germany may have a shot with a very different type of song than your usual Eurovision fare!  I also think England will score more than the 0 points they got last year!

Switzerland gets my vote for the most wondous group name (Piero Esteriore & the Music Stars) and I can’t wait to see the full video from Belarus in the week-long Countdown to Eurovision!

Ian, Eurovision Tragic.

{ Edit: The BBC has better video quality! ;-) }

{ Edit 2: Corrected title as England does not participate: the UK does! }

Ian, is it a co-incidence that your post includes both Eurovision and repentance?

There’s only 1 thing good about watching eurovision: Terry Wogan.  SBS’s stubborn insistance on having Des Mangan do the commentary means I’ll be giving the prime coverage a miss and hoping for a replay of the real version from the beeb. Last year Terry Wogan had me in stitches during the voting.. I was trying to assemble a bed and I was having great difficulties while he was predicting the “seize points” for each of the countries… he he

Chris: quite possibly! ;-)

Rowen: I can but agree.  I understand SBS thinks that the Anglo-centric references of Terry go over our heads, but to me they only make up a very small proportion of comments—and not meaning offence to Des, but he is nowhere near as good as Terry.  I think we were lucky if Des uttered two sentences last year; Terry’s speaking over and acerbic comments are wondrous!  I too hope for a repeat with Wogan voiceover.

Ian, who will be watching anyway.  I do so love it! ;-)

My name is Sophie Kunze, and I’m a Eurovisionaholic.

It’s become part of Kunze family tradition to watch and mock.  Mockity mockity mock.  It started a few years ago when we accidentally stumbled onto it with the remote, and saw the German entry dressed up in American Indian headdresses.  Then my father started dancing.  There was no turning back.

I was terribly dissapointed to have missed “Eurovision Junior” last week.  I had no idea there was a kids’ version, but I get the impression it would be just like the adults, only worse.  More mockery!

The key to understanding it all: Whichever country wins has to pay to host the next one.  Ergo, no one wants to win and sends the worst possible acts.

And yes, I’m all about the Terry Wogan love.  Accept no substitutes.

Well, I just listened to a 20 minute interview on 702 ABC (*shouts: NERD!!*) with Des, and yes he is going to be the voice of eurovision again this year.  Null Points to SBS, I’m afraid.  They are even shipping him off to Turkey..  And there’s talk of an ABBA reunion.  groan.  I don’t have an elevator in my home to give Waterloo the correct ambience, so I might have to give it a wide berth until SBS relent and give us the full fat version late one sunday arvo.

Ian adds to the applause given to Ms Kunze...

I worry about your Euro-tragic status, Rowen.  I too heard the interview on 702 (more shouts of NERD ;-)) and was filled with glee at the chance of the dulcet tones of Waterloo reverberating around my bedroom.  I am sure that says more about me than anything else.

Iceland has gone up in my estimation with sublime lyrics that speak of ineffable wonders:

Blend with my blue
Those colours of you.
Please help me
See it through ooh.

Though, as someone on another BB said, with the upcoming nuptials of “our Mary Donaldson”, perhaps we Aussies should be supporting the Danes and the wondrous lyrics of

Love on fire, you’re my messiah, shame on you.

I surely do not understand why people could think of anything else at this time.

Ian. ;-)

Congrats to Ukraine’s very own Warrior Princess, the ravishing Ruslana!  Very tribal and a worthy winner!  (Even though I was hoping for the luscious Lena from Sweden and her mike-stand to take the prize :( )

Favourite moment—last year’s winner Sertab getting her stiletto caught in the grate and her shoe coming off! ;-) Endless moments of merriment!  Though Piero from Switzerland knocking himself in the head with the mike in the semi-finals and Monaco’s coat of many lightbulbs were also favourites.

Bring on Kiev 2005!

Oh well, at least it wasn’t Greece with the velcro white suits and gold beaded bikinis.

What a riot.
