Thanks Joseph. So does that mean there is no difference between books that would be reviewed in Southen Cross and in (say) the SMH, the Oz, or the Daily Tele (although I don’t know if they are into book reviews at the Tele)?

Just bumping this question up again to see if Joseph or some other SA SAhib might like to have a crack at answering.

Thanks everyone else for your answers and comments, but I was really hoping for a slightly more in-depth explanation of what goes on from Joseph, or another SA policy-setter. Sorry to be troublesome!

Firstly, I would like to sincerely apologise for not answering Gordon’s questions about our culture reviews policy sooner. It was not an intended snub. I merely failed to pay attention to the forums over the past few weeks and so missed the worthwhile questions.
Secondly, thanks to Angela and Alan who responded in my absence.
Angela is indeed correct that as Christians

“We can do something our culture cannot - provide a critique of our culture, in this case a work of fiction or non-fiction, from a Christian perspective.

” This is one thing our reviewers aim to do in looking at contemporary cultural forms.
Alan also correctly pointed out that Mark and I send our reviewers “

a suggested list of questions to ask of a book, which is quite helpful for reaching a Christian perspective on a work”.

These guidelines help reviewers work in an apologetic paradigm when writing their reviews.
But Gordon, I would like to add to these answers from others and say that our reviews of films, music and books also serve in bringing traffic to our website that might not otherwise come to a Christian website. We hope that people might be challenged by a Christian worldview on society that they might not otherwise have thought about. We also hope they might check out other parts of our website and get a bigger taste of what Christians are doing and have to say.
We also hope our reviews will equip Christians with ways of thinking about popular culture that they otherwise might not have.
If you have any more questions Gordon, or if I have not answered these ones sufficiently, feel free to ask again.

“She just said that [skipping + playing] is what children do,” said Roland.

Tiffany wondered about this. As far as she could see, children mostly argued, shouted, ran around very fast, laughed loudly, picked their noses, got dirty and sulked. Any seen dancing and skipping and singing had probably been stung by a wasp.

It’s the New Year. I’m living in hope.

[edit:] oops! My turn to have egg on my face. I missed Joseph’s kind reply a bit further up. My fault entirely. Apologies around, especially to Joseph!!

Thanks Joseph, I will now go away and have a bit of a think, methinks.

Hi all,

I am after someone who is interested in the true crime genre to review a book called Mr Sin: The Abe Saffron Dossier.
The catch is, you need to turn the review around in two and a half weeks because we are keen to include it in the next issue of Southern Cross newspaper.
So, if you think you can give a Christian perspective on this book and examine society’s interest with true crime and do it in around 400 to 500 words and get it back to me in 16 days then .
