Many Christians may not know his name, but most would know his songs such as Lord, I Give You My Heart, Let Creation Sing and Still . His name is Reuben Morgan and he has penned over 100 songs sung by Christians across the globe.
Reuben Morgan’s latest album Everyone features both new and old songs. It has a soft-rock feel and makes good use of backing vocalists. It is suitable for congregational singing and sheet music is included.
Morgan’s CD booklet notes explore the theology of worship and mission beginning with the words of John Piper: “Mission is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is”.
Morgan explains that mission is reaching out to people so that they can turn back to Jesus and worship their Creator: “God-worship can energise us in missions and God-worship is the purpose of missions”. In other words, worshipping God will encourage and inspire us in gospel-work, and gospel-work is about calling everyone to worship God. Morgan describes worship as knowing God and responding to Him with love, adoration and honour.
Morgan hopes his new album will “stir in people the desire to worship God and, in doing so, be challenged to action as a form of worship”. For Morgan this has included supporting orphanages, community development, and church-planting around the world.
Although Morgan’s lyrics occasionally seem disjointed, they speak clearly about God and what He has done. We are reminded that God is the all-powerful Creator who “can move mountains and is King over the Flood”. He is “mighty to save”, having “conquered the grave”. This is good news for everyone, for we are all sinners who need saving: “Everyone needs compassion / Love that’s never failing ... Everyone needs forgiveness / The kindness of a Saviour”. Morgan’s songs emphasise salvation as God’s work, not ours: “Let go of everything I’ve done ... Fall back on everything You’ve done ... When all the world is swept away / You are all the things I need”.
Reminded of God’s amazing love we must surely respond as Morgan urges, with adoration and love for God: “Here I am waiting / Abide in me I pray / Here I am longing for You”; “I love You / more than life”. When I meditated on these lyrics I had to ask myself, Am I longing for God? Do I love God more than my life? I need to keep singing “Bring me to my knees / May I know Jesus more and more”, “Come live in me / All my life / Take Over”.
Morgan’s lyrics, though much shorter than the Psalms, similarly inspire me to worship God in my words and actions. Let us join Reuben Morgan in praising God for all He has done.
